A candle burns near flowers and a casket

January 14, 2023

Dear Mayfair Lane neighbors,

This week we learned from our longtime facilities hand, Rick Guard, that he lost two relatives in the recent winter storm. Rick's brother, Steve Guard, and his partner, Kristi Johnson, were unhoused, estranged from most of their relatives, and succumbed to the elements due to inadequate shelter. The story of their passing can be found in the Buffalo News here: Homeless couple who died in tent had 'big hearts'

Amy has volunteered to get a card to Rick with our condolences, on behalf of the Lane.

GoFundMe appeals have been launched to help pay for Steve and Kristi's funerals. (Click here for Steve's page, and here for Kristi's.) I'm passing these along in case anyone is so moved and in a position to be able to help. No pressure or obligation. I know everyone was impacted uniquely and is recovering differently from the storm, and that the need across the community is vast.

Thanks to everyone who checked in on a neighbor, helped dig the Lane out, or even simply stayed home to ride things out safely and out of the way last month. Here's looking to a brighter 2023.

Bobby
on behalf of the Mayfair Lane Board
